YouTube Opens Shopping Affiliate Program to Channels With 500-Plus Subscribers, Expanding Creator Commerce Pool

YouTube expanded its Shopping affiliate program to U.S. creators with as few as 500 subscribers, down significantly from the prior 10,000-subscriber threshold. The move is part of CEO Neal Mohan's 2026 plan to make YouTube a premier shopping destination where viewers buy products without leaving the app. YouTube is also developing a connected TV shopping feature that lets television viewers scan an embedded QR code to purchase products on their phone. TikTok Shop crossed quarterly revenue comparable to eBay in late 2025, and YouTube's expansion is a direct competitive response to that growth.

THE BREAKDOWN

Opening affiliate access to 500-subscriber channels floods the market with lower-cost product recommendations, which compresses affiliate commission rates across the board. For agents with clients above the 100K mark, this creates pressure to negotiate non-affiliate flat fee structures rather than performance splits, since brands can now run affiliate links through thousands of micro-creators for comparable distribution. The CTV shopping integration is the more important long-term development: if YouTube closes the 'couch to cart' loop on television screens, it becomes a more powerful commerce channel than TikTok Shop. Agents should start incorporating CTV reach data in pitch decks for clients with strong YouTube-on-TV viewership numbers.
