Spotify tests ad skipping inside podcasts and puts creator revenue at risk
Podnews reports that Spotify is testing a Skip ahead button inside podcast ads and sponsorship messages in the United States. The tool can appear on ads Spotify sold and on creator-read messages that promote premium memberships. Podnews says Spotify remains the biggest podcast network in the United States by reach, according to Edison Research data. The test cuts into one of podcasting's core ad advantages: host-read messages that listeners actually hear. For creators, the risk is that platform UX starts training audiences to bypass the monetization that funds the show.
THE BREAKDOWN
Podcast reps should review ad contracts for platform-controlled skip behavior. If a buyer pays for host-read inventory, the agreement should say how skipped impressions are counted and whether makegoods apply. Creators should push premium membership links, email capture, and direct sponsorship assets that do not depend on one app's playback interface. Brands need reporting that distinguishes delivered audio from heard ads when skip tools are active. If Spotify expands the test, rates for platform-exposed inventory may need a risk discount while direct channels become more valuable.
