SoundCloud Launches Follower-Only Release Feature for Artist Pro Subscribers
SoundCloud launched 'Follower Exclusive Releases' for Artist Pro subscribers, allowing creators to gate new tracks behind a follow, either temporarily or permanently. Artists can use it for early demos, surprise drops, or pre-release previews ahead of wider distribution. The feature launched with Dutch DJ Chris Stussy, who released a single exclusively to SoundCloud followers ahead of his debut album on April 3. SoundCloud now hosts 500 million tracks and has allowed artists to keep 100% of royalties earned on the platform since eliminating its distribution revenue share in November 2025.
THE BREAKDOWN
The follower-gated release format turns SoundCloud's follow button into something close to a lightweight fan subscription, without requiring a monthly fee from fans. For independent artists and their managers, this creates a strategic option between keeping a track private and releasing it publicly: use it as a proof-of-demand moment before shopping to labels or distributors. If a track generates 50,000 new followers while gated on SoundCloud, that is a concrete data point for a label shopping conversation. The 100% royalty retention on the platform means there is no cost to testing there, which makes SoundCloud a stronger first-release option for unsigned or indie artists than it has been in years.
