Seahawks Sell for NFL Record $9.612 Billion to Khosla Ventures Group

Source: Front Office SportsFull story →

The Seattle Seahawks were sold for $9.612 billion to a group led by Vinod Khosla, founder of Khosla Ventures, breaking the NFL change-of-control record set by the 2023 Washington Commanders sale at $6.05 billion. Neeru Khosla will serve as controlling owner, with son Neal Khosla expected to take a significant leadership role. Vinod Khosla will be required to sell his minority stake in the 49ers to complete the deal. The estate of late Microsoft founder Paul Allen put the team up for sale on February 18, 10 days after Super Bowl LX. At least four bids were made, with the Khosla group edging out a competing group led by former Celtics governor Wyc Grousbeck.

THE BREAKDOWN

A $9.6 billion team valuation compresses the multiple between sports franchise prices and everything else in entertainment, which matters when creator talent is negotiating athlete partnership deals. When franchise values are at all-time highs, the brands and sponsors attached to those franchises also price higher. Agents brokering athlete endorsement deals should be using franchise valuations as a data point in sponsorship conversations. The Khosla tech-VC background is worth watching: tech-leaning ownership groups tend to move faster on creator and digital media partnerships than traditional sports families, and Neal Khosla's expected leadership role suggests a younger, more digital-native operator at the controls.
