Oprah Signs Exclusive Multiyear Amazon Deal for Podcast, Book Club, and 25 Seasons of Her Show

Source: VarietyFull story →

Oprah Winfrey's Harpo Entertainment struck a multiyear exclusive deal with Amazon giving Wondery video and audio distribution rights, plus ad-sales rights, to The Oprah Podcast across Prime Video, Amazon Music, Fire TV Channels, and Audible. The agreement also covers the Oprah's Book Club and Oprah's Favorite Things franchises, and the full back catalog of The Oprah Winfrey Show, 25 seasons of television. Starting in July, the podcast expands from one to two episodes per week. The show will remain available on YouTube and major podcast platforms. Financial terms were not disclosed. Wondery's current talent-driven roster includes New Heights (Travis and Jason Kelce), Dax Shepard's Armchair Expert, and LeBron James' Mind the Game.

THE BREAKDOWN

The Oprah deal is the clearest public comp to date for how a legacy TV host converts her audience into a multi-platform audio and franchise deal with a streaming giant. The bundling of a podcast, a product franchise (Favorite Things), and a TV archive into one agreement creates a template for agents with lifestyle-oriented clients who have brand history outside social media. Brand managers attached to Oprah's Favorite Things now deal with Amazon's ad infrastructure, which changes how product placements are priced and reported. Any talent with a weekly podcast and an existing franchise brand should now be asking their agent what an archive rights package is worth.
