Meta moves disputed commercial terms deadline to November 20

Source: DigidayFull story →

Meta has delayed its updated Commercial Terms and Self-Serve Ad Terms from October 30 to November 20 after publisher objections, Digiday reports. The disputed language concerns websites associated with business accounts on Facebook, Instagram, WhatsApp and Threads. Meta removed the word 'train' on October 16 and narrowed the stated use of scraped content to advertising and business products. Publisher groups say those revisions do not resolve their concerns about permission and compensation. Meta says the update does not change how it crawls content and that owners can still signal preferences through robots.txt.

THE BREAKDOWN

Have counsel review the revised terms against the websites attached to each client's business accounts before November 20. Record which entity owns those sites and which party can authorize platform permissions. Do not tell talent that a robots.txt instruction guarantees protection, because publishers dispute whether the available controls are adequate. Keep negotiated AI licenses separate from routine social distribution permissions and flag any apparent conflict for the licensee.
