IAB works on measurement rules for ads delivered to AI agents
Digiday reports that the Interactive Advertising Bureau is building a framework for ads that reach AI agents before they reach people. The framework is due November 12 and is meant to answer who gets credit when an ad influences an AI tool that then shapes a consumer decision. The problem matters for publishers, platforms, and advertisers because AI answers can sit between the media buy and the final human action. Digiday notes that ads are starting to be served to bots instead of only to human readers or viewers. The first version will give buyers and sellers common language before pricing standards settle.
THE BREAKDOWN
Creator deals will need AI-attribution language sooner than most teams expect. If a creator review, shopping guide, or newsletter is used by an AI assistant, the value may show up as assisted discovery rather than a click. Agents should push for reporting that captures AI referral traffic, answer citations, and downstream sales where the buyer can provide it. Brand managers should avoid last-click-only bonus terms when a creator's content may train or inform an answer engine. Contracts should name which attribution windows, citation reports, and bot traffic filters count toward renewal decisions.
