Gilbert Arenas takes Gil's Arena to Playmaker after Underdog exits original content
Front Office Sports reported that Gilbert Arenas's podcast Gil's Arena will join Playmaker later this summer after leaving Underdog. Longtime cohost Josiah Johnson will remain with Arenas on the new platform. The show launched in 2023 and averages more than 70 million views per year. Arenas previously sold 50% of the show to Underdog when he partnered with the fantasy company in February 2023. Underdog has since exited original content to focus on prediction markets and daily fantasy, and the Gil's Arena name is expected to transfer back to Arenas later this summer.
THE BREAKDOWN
This is a rights-control case study for athlete-led media. Agents should avoid platform deals where the athlete loses durable control of show names, archives, clips, audience data and spin-off rights. If a partner changes strategy, the contract needs a reversion path that lets the talent move the show without starting from zero. Brand managers buying athlete podcasts should ask who owns the IP and whether distribution is stable for the full campaign term. Five episodes per week creates a lot of inventory, but only if ad rights, clips and category exclusivity are clean.
