Disney and iHeartMedia put video podcasts inside Disney+ and Hulu

Source: The Hollywood ReporterFull story →

The Hollywood Reporter reports that Disney signed a streaming deal with iHeartMedia to bring video podcasts to Disney+ and Hulu. The first title, Hey Jonas!, launches August 14 ahead of Camp Rock 3 on Disney+. The package also includes Pod Meets World, Desperately Devoted, Fake Doctors, Real Friends with Zach and Donald, StraightioLab, and Thanks Dad with Ego Nwodim. Disney has already used companion and rewatch podcasts around titles such as American Idol, The Shards, and That Was Us. The new deal puts podcast talent closer to streaming franchises and subscription platforms.

THE BREAKDOWN

Video podcasts tied to entertainment IP should be negotiated like streaming extensions, not ordinary audio inventory. Hosts need terms for episode video rights, clips, platform exclusivity, promotion obligations, archive windows, and brand integrations. If a streamer uses a podcast to keep fans engaged between seasons, talent should ask for bonuses tied to renewal, franchise marketing, or subscriber goals. Brands buying host-read ads around these shows should expect higher rates when distribution includes Disney+ or Hulu. Podcast reps should also protect YouTube and social clip rights before a streamer locks up video output.
